Personalised and precision nutrition (PPN) was identified as a key pillar for advancing nutrition science in Australia in the National Committee for Nutrition’s Decadal Plan for Nutrition Science in 2019. In the six years since, the global health landscape has changed dramatically. The COVID-19 pandemic, alongside escalating environmental and social challenges has prompted the need to discuss the potential for PPN in this new landscape. At the same time, rapid progress in digital health, data science, and molecular technologies has transformed the possibilities for investigating individualised responses to nutrition and lifestyle.
This position statement presents a consensus definition of PPN and addresses three key themes for its development in Australia:
1. The unique Australian context, including its diverse population.
2. Building workforce capacity across food, nutrition, health, and medical sectors.
3. Advancing ethical, PPN-focused research.
These priorities form the foundation for an ambitious, co-designed program of work that will position Australia at the forefront of global PPN research and applications. By harnessing our scientific strengths and diverse population, PPN can transform our understanding of how diet shapes health, and deliver more effective, equitable, and sustainable nutrition solutions for all Australians.
