Michael Tieland
Dr. Michael Tieland serves as an Associate Professor of Nutrition Science at the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. He received his training in nutrition and exercise physiology at Wageningen and Maastricht University in the Netherlands, followed by a Ph.D. and post-doctoral research at Wageningen University, where his research focus was on the interaction of dietary protein, exercise, and healthy aging. With a dedication to bridging the gap between scientific discoveries and practical application, he transitioned to the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. In this role, he endeavoured to translate his nutrition and physical activity research findings into tangible practices that could positively influence the lives of older adults.
During his academic career, Dr. Tieland has conducted 25 randomized controlled trials and implementation studies addressing various aspects of nutrition and physical activity for older adults. His research has covered a range of settings and conditions, including primary care, hospitals, nursing homes, and specific health issues such as obesity, type II diabetes, frailty, and sarcopenia. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Tieland is actively involved in knowledge dissemination, having conducted over 250 public speaking sessions and workshops for healthcare professionals. He has authored >70 research articles (H-index of 29) and 3 book chapters.
Dr. Tieland is a member of several professional societies, including the Dutch Society of Gerontology, the Dutch Society of Dietitians (NvD), the National Physiotherapist Society (KNGF), the Global Initiative on Sarcopenia (GLIS), the European Nutritional Leadership Platform (ENLP), the Australian Physiological Society (APS), the Nutrition Society of Australia, and the Australian and New Zealand Society for Sarcopenia and Frailty Research (ANZSSFR).
His primary aim is to translate research findings into practical applications, particularly through educational programs and evidence-based interventions to support healthy aging. Through his work in research, education, and professional engagement, Dr. Tieland strives to contribute to the well-being of older adults both nationally and internationally.
